Port Sunlight

Last day in Liverpool. We made use of the Wirral railway to cross the Mersey and get within walking distance of the Port Sunlight Museum.

It was well worth the visit to understand the development the settlement by William Lever. Over 30 architects were used from 1888. He not only provided housing for his workers but each house had a garden and access to allotments to grow their own food. Children were given a good education and workers provided with lunch. A cottage hospital, hall for social events, theatre, shop plus swimming pool and gymnasium were provided. No wonder the children were taller and healthier than their counterparts in industrial slums.

Quite an achievement given the original site was marshy farmland crisis crossed by tidal creeks.
