Avebury (Sunday 5th June 2016)

How come I skipped a day and yet I'm still a day behind with my blipping? I've just been working on my monochrome for the 'Reflections' challenge and my standing stone blip isn't up yet.

I visited the Marlborough Waterfront for a third attempt to see the watervole family. There had been plenty of watervole activity with fresh burrow holes appearing on the grassy bank above their home, but they weren't showing themselves. A moorhen nest had been flattened and its six eggs lay drowned at the bottom of the river. The moorhen wasn't to be seen and my theory was that a male moorhen had sabotaged the eggs so that she would mate with him and raise his family instead. I learned later that there had been a big moorhen fight at five a.m. that morning.

When I moved to Calne in the eighties the standing stones at Avebury were a big attraction, and I've spent a lot of time studying them, reading up on them and, of course, photographing them, and I still like to mingle with them from time to time, and did so on my way back from the Waterfront. These look like a stone Loch Ness monster rising out of the Earth.

Vashti Bunyan - Winter Is Blue (1968)
Another track from my birthday present CD set Dust On The Nettles - a journey through the british underground folk scene 1967-1972, this track originally appeared on the soundtrack to Peter Whitehead's underground film Tonite Let's All Make Love In London. It paired Vashti (as she was then known) with the duo Twice As Much, as both were managed by Andrew 'Loog' Oldham, on this otherwise unreleased recording of a song written by Vashti Bunyan.
