HMS Duncan
This morning we visited two warships docked in Kirkwall. One German, FDS Brandenburg and this British, HMS Duncan. The British ship was fascinating, especially the walk through the Operation room. Banks of desks supporting three computer screens each, joysticks to target, buttons to 'lock on' and a foot pedal for the shooty bit! It all looked like a room full of computer game stations.
This gun up front, a BAE 4.5inch Mk8, can accurately hit a meter square target 14miles away. The barrel is just over 6m long, each shell weighs 21kg and the gun can fire 28 rounds per minute... Apparently the whole Bridge shakes when it's in action! Was also quite nice seeing lots of strapping men in various uniforms.
Me and Gorgeous then took the dogs to Breck in Orphir, a new walk and nice to see a different bit of coastline.
Tomorrow Evie the Wonderdog will pack her suitcase and return home, we haven't told her yet as she would spend the night staring at us from atop her packed case, tapping her wristwatch and sighing impatiently.
