Sock it to Me

It must be 50 years since I knitted socks, and through the fog of distant memory, this might just be the 3rd pair I've finished.

The first pair were grey short socks knitted at school in wool fine enough and with needles thin enough to keep me busy for a lot of domestic classes which we blue stocking girls had foisted on us in the term before we left school, in the hope of being useful in later life despite any academic achievement we might achieve.

The second pair were knitted in the same fine wool with the same thin needles but with an intricate pattern thrown in, for the serious boyfriend living away from home in Bristol.
He was delighted with the effort and obvious commitment to the relationship, but washed them in the launderette at 60 degrees, whereupon they became felted socks for the foot challenged.

Having seen the wonderful socks knitted by Poppy in Herston and Christine in North Ronaldsay when we were up in Orkney last month, I though I'd have a go with the German wool which does it's own thing pattern and colourwise, giving amazing results.

I was prepared to knit this pair for his Lordship, but he said he had a drawer full of socks already, so I decided to shorten them for myself, although I know that with square feet I won't manage to fit them into any of my shoes, but they might fit in to my slippers.

The socks are machine washable and guaranteed for 10 years. They could possibly see me out!
