Spinalonga

Spinalonga is a small island off Elounda in North Eastern Crete and has the dubious distinction of being the site of one of the last leper colonies in Europe. It is perhaps not wise to apply modern 'first world' values when hearing about the history of the island but it one of the saddest places I have visited.  Difficult to find one image which sums up the effect the island had on us but this doorway to the unknown is probably the closest.
