Stromness

We headed away from the Kirkwall crowds to Stromness crawling into the Unstan tomb on the way. It's really good to be able to enter these tombs, even though it needs a bit of a crawl. As with most, this one has been roofed in concrete which does lessen the impact but preserves the interior.
Then on to the picturesque port of Stromness where traffic vies for space with pedestrians in the narrow cobbled lanes.
The Pier Gallery has an absolutely stunning collection including many of my favourite artists from the St Ives group - Hepworth, Scott, Lanyon, Wallis, Frost and a Sean Sculley too. The exhibit of local crafts people was excellent and the gallery itself manages to relate to its setting and allows natural light in.
Then a walk along the cliffs past WWII batteries and a large cemetery. Ice creams and teas were taken!
