Türk sanat müziği
'Music on Mondays' lunchtime concert today was sublime. A group of students with two teachers, played five Turkish Sanat (Art) songs from the repertoire of the C19th Ottoman court. Instruments from left to right: Bendir; Kudüm; Ney (x3) and Tambur. Two performances to appreciative audiences. A crowded audience in our small faculty parlour however meant a decent photo was impossible, but at least it is appropriate for this week's Mono Monday topic of "Art" (thanks to Nickimags for hosting)
'Classical Turkish music (Turkish: Türk sanat müziği, "Turkish art music"; or Klasik Türk müziği, "Classical Turkish music") developed in Istanbul and other major Ottoman cities and towns through the palaces, mosques, and Sufi lodges of the Ottoman Empire. Above all a vocal music, Ottoman music traditionally accompanies a solo singer with a small instrumental ensemble. Sometimes described as monophonic music, the variety of ornamentation and variation in the ensemble requires the more accurate term heterophonic.' Wikipedia
A very busy day that finished with a colleague's birthday pot-luck dinner party on the terrace of another colleague with a wonderful view of the beautiful blue Bosphorus - a good crowd and a tasty table set before us in this scenic site. Nice way to end a busy Monday. A very hot (about 30ºC) and endlessly sunny Monday in fact. It seems that summer is probably finally here.
