The RC Seminary Mill Braes of Glenlivet
In the 18C RC worship was illegal in Scotland,so in a remote location at Scanlan, some brave Catholics in 1715 built a seminary for the initial training of young men as priests Theybthen went of to Europe..After the disaster of Bonnie Prince Charlie's rightful but badly planned campaign to get the Stuart Crown restored ending at Culloden in 1746",The Duke of Cumberland's men destroyed the first seminary, but it was rebuilt ,though raids and deaths meant it eventually ceased to train before the 18C was out. This is the water mill which powered the stone to grind the corn..Over the last twenty years ,the seminary has been repaired and is now at the end of a delightful walk, past the now reopened Braeval Distillery, always open, just donations and certainly worth a visit. It is intended to restore the mill one day.
