The weeping window
An amazing day from start to finish.
After Mike cooked breakfast and I had washed up we headed out to Deerness. Beautiful blue skies and sunshine. We went to the Gloup, a collapsed sea cave 80 foot deep, a dark hole with walls covered in plants where some light reaches. Lapwings had newly hatched chicks in the field near to the pathway so were frantically flying overhead screeching to keep us away.
We passed a field of Water Buffalo, yes, a field of Buffalo looking quite at home. They are bred for there could quailty meat and milk and apparently are docile animals and have one speed when moving around which is Slow :)
After we went for a walk at Newark Bay. The tide was coming in and the water was an amazng colour as it covered the white sand beach. The sky was dotted with a layer of white fluffy clouds. Lots of waders taking a bath.
On to the Deerness Community Centre where we were given a lift down to St Ninans Kirk to watch The Unthanks perform an acoustic set. Fantastic setting and a fantastic sound. Really beautiful and got the emotions going. The sound was really incredible and thoroughly enjoyable.
Back to the Community Centre where we had tea and tasty home made cakes and watched The unthanks clog dancing to another tune from the fiddle and guitar.
On to Kirkwall to see the Weeping Window while the sun was still shining. The poppies are displayed from one of the small windows in St Magnus Cathedral to commemorate the 100 year Anniversay of the Battle Of Jutland. A wonderful sight, the Cathedral is impressive by itself but the poppies looked wonderful and again another emotional moment.
We looked round the Cathedral , the light was perfectly shining through the stainglass and causing patterns of light to reflect on the stone pillars . It was busy inside with the BBC setting up equipment fot the live broadcast of the service that takes place on Tuesday. Masses of wires , rigging and electronic equipment everywhere.
We were pleased to see that Judith Glues shop/café as still open so we went in for dinner. I had a Westry Crab jacket potato, Mike had Orkney cheddar jacket.
We enjoyed an evening watching the tattoo, everything from pipe bands, to Vikings , brilliant.
At Inganass bay at sunset watching starlings display and a male hen harrier fly over.
