This incredibly tranquil and beautiful setting is part of an ancient monument named 'The Hilsea Lines Rampart'. It was one of many defensive structures built around Portsmouth to protect it and the Royal dockyard from invading enemies such as Napoleon Bonaparte.
The extra photo shows one of the imposing tunnel entrances through the deep walls to the interior.
