Burning Mountain

The title doesn't say much about the picture but I had just descended from the walk up the mountain and couldn't resist these cows heading down for a drink in the late afternoon.

The mountain has been burning for maybe a thousand years! It is actually a coal seam in the Hunter Valley, NSW. The surface of white-ish rocks (alum) at the top wasn't very photogenic, looking like a hardened version of the ash from a fireplace. There was a strong whiff of sulphur too which didn't encourage lingering.
