Bison Ranch, Landštejn Castle, Czech Republic
Today was a public holiday (again - there are 4 or 5 in May) for Fronleichnam (Corpus Christi). The weather was kind to us so we drove to the Bison Ranch restaurant in Czech republic where they raise the bison and serve them in the restaurant. I was half expecting one to wander in and offer its tenderloin or rump to me - as in The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. (Remember that MM challenge - by coincidence, exactly one year ago?). We chose the tenderloin as the Chateaubriand was not available today. It was cooked to perfection (medium rare) and the texture was like butter. Expensive, but worthwhile.
We stopped into Landštejn Castle on the way back, one of the oldest and best preserved structures in Europe. It was built early 13th century but was burnt out in 1771 after a lightning strike. It fell into ruin and was made open to the public in 1990. The outer walls are intact and the main 6 story tower is fully intact and preserved. The view from the tower is magnificent - the surrounding land with its forests and lakes is nicknamed Czech Canada due to the harsh climate.More photos here and the extra is our lunch
