Memorial on Corndon Down, Dartmoor
Walking today from New Bridge. We stopped at the memorial to Lieutenant Evelyn Anthony Cave Penney, who was killed on 8 June 1918, aged 19. He was a member of an elite unit, Queen Victoria’s Own Corps of Guides Infantry (F.F.) (Lumsden’s), and is buried at Ramleh War Cemetery, Palestine, and commemorated here. His widowed mother lived at Rogue’s Roost, a house overlooking the East Dart Valley, near Sherwell, on the slopes of Corndon Down, which is still there. Previously his mother and father (Frank) lived at Ardfin, Lower Woodfield Road, Torquay, which is now incorporated in the Lincombe Hall Hotel.
