Tiny homes
If you have money to spend, you can get a waterfront property or a stately home any day on Saltspring. For people without money, it can be hard to find an affordable place to live. This is probably the most urgent social need on our otherwise paradisaical island. To address this problem, a Saltspring Island Land Bank Society has been founded. This body organize fund raising and buy properties, and rebuilt them as apartment building or make them in other ways suitable for renting.
Their latest initiative is called Tiny Community Cottages. They plan to build small and movable cottages, using surplus material from torn down houses or other cheap material and volunteers for the labour.
In a press release they state:
"The Land Bank propose to place the small homes on the private properties of willing hosts/landlords in a tenancy agreement. This approach is meant to address the dearth of affordable housing on the island, focusing on single persons who need it the most."
As an example, they have built this little house and expose it on the parking lot of the high school.
