Necropolis Railway

At its peak, the London Necropolis Railway carried 3000 coffins a year from this dedicated London terminus to the Brookwood Cemetery in Surrey, along with funeral congregations. Different classes of travel were provided for both living and deceased passengers, with first class funerals offering private waiting rooms, more elegant hearse compartments and a choice of grave sites. Separate platforms for first and third class mourners were separated by opaque glass barriers to avoid class mingling. Near to the cemetery was the West Hill Golf Club, and golfers were occasionally known to ride the Necropolis Railway disguised as mourners to take advantage of the cheaper fares.
