Ophioglossum
Ophioglossum vulgatum to be specific - Common Adder's-Tongue in vernacular-speak. These diminutive ferns (c. 8cm tall) are non-flowering, cryptogamous (literally 'hidden sex') plants. Unlike those showy, flowering plants - who's sex is so in-ya-face - these little fellas' reproductive parts are rather difficult to see. The spore-bearing, fertile spike on the end of the stalk is reckoned to resemble a snake's tongue.
Common Adder's-Tongue is all over our meadows like a rash, but rather embarrassingly I didn't spot it for the first 2 or 3 years. Perhaps it's just spread dramatically in response to our fantastic meadow-management regime...
