Losgaintir Bay

Today's the day ........................ to settle in

Our house for the week was on the west coast of the Isle of Harris at Scarista..

Compared with the rocky, indented coastline of east Harris, the west side is dominated by languid sandy beaches like this one at Losgaintir.  The shell sand is almost pure white and it gives the sea its incredible green/blue colour.  The sand is blown inland over the peat soil to form the fertile machair  in which a variety of wild flowers were just beginning to show themselves.

For the most part you usually have these fabulous beaches all to yourself - and in fact you feel quite miffed if you have to share them with anyone else.  The extra is our own beach, just across from the house ...................
