The Unknown Girl
The photograph is of the digital memorial to the 923 Welch Fusiliers who died at the Battle of Somme. (1st July - 18 Nov 1916). Created by award-winning international art and design collective Squidsoup, the illuminated installation will accompany the premiere of the Cardiff-based company's new opera In Parenthesis. Acclaimed British composer Iain Bell's adaptation of the epic poem by poet, writer and artist David Jones is a remembrance of his own personal experience as a soldier at the Battle of Mametz Wood and it is being staged as part of 14-18NOW, the UK cultural programme for the First World War centenary. Some of the men killed at Somme would have served with Jones at Mametz Wood.
It was pouring with rain, hardly anyone about, but this girl was staring intently at the red LED lights. I don't know who she was, but she was lost in thought.
Afterwards, I collected Mrs BB who was out on the town with some colleagues who had just retired. She says it was her 'retirement' party too as she doesn't want one when she goes in September.
