My Alesund

Well, we did not get up for the 'furthest North'. Instead, we stayed in bed and watched the ship's progress on the bridge camera.

The next event was a trip into the 'Magdalenafjord', a fairly short sea loch with several glaciers flowing into it. If we were to see Polar Bears, we were told, this was the place it might happen. Some of the crew and passengers had seen them on previous visits to this area -but we were not so lucky. But the scenery was, once again, magnificent.

Then came a visit to Ny Alesund. This is a smaller community than Longyearben and also comes from a mining history: Svalbard was (is?) big on coal. Nowadays, however, it is a scientific community. What a setting. In today's blip, I try to show something of it in a series of panoramas.

By evening, I was totally exhausted. No show, no midnight sun. Just dinner, and an early bed. All day at sea tomorrow. It's hard work being a tourist!
