Hammering Man

This morning we took the car back to the airport and discovered we had done 2,821 miles since leaving Las Vegas - and that seems such a long time ago. It was sad to leave the car behind, as it has played such a vital role in our adventure.

We caught the Link Light Rail back into downtown Seattle – a very efficient service. We visited the Seattle Art Museum, where I was captured by a wonderful collection of Native American art - and made some purchases. This is the Hammering Man, a 48ft metal sculpture that guards the entrance to SAM. It is supposed to represent the worker in all of us.

Of course we had to have a walk through the famous Pike Place Market and see the oldest surviving Starbucks outlet, with the crowds queuing to be able to say they have been in.

At the end of the afternoon the amazing NannaK then took me to the most impressive yarn store I have ever seen and to the most wonderful book store. It was perhaps as well that I had to consider the weight of our cases, as otherwise I might have bought more than one book.

This evening we again had the company of our wonderful ‘tour guides’, who took us to a local Italian/Spanish restaurant, where the chef regaled us with fabulous tales of his life and proved to be the first person in the US that Gordon has been able to talk football with (see extra). The food was excellent too!

A fine end to our most memorable stay in Seattle. Tomorrow we take to the train for the journey to Chicago.
