Over the Caucasus

Caucasus (Russian Kavkaz):  The mountain system and region lying between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea and occupied by Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia.

Skirting the Caucasus on the way back to Moscow this afternoon. Interesting to read that Mount Elbrus (5,642m), the highest point in the Caucasus is 832 m higher than Mont Blanc (4,810m), the highest peak in the Alps.

I've often wondered why white people are in some places referred to as "Caucasians" - so finally looked it up today - the answer taken verbatim from this source:
"  So why do we call white people Caucasians? The term was popularized by the German scientist Johann Friedrich Blumenbach, who in 1795 divided the human species into five races: Caucasian, the "white" race; Mongolian, the "yellow" race; Malayan, the "brown" race; Ethiopian, the "black" race; and American, the "red" race. He considered the Caucasians to be the first race on Earth, consistent with the common conception of the Caucasus as a place of human origin."    The bit about 'origins' follows on in some way from yesterday's blip.

PS.  I've started adding my blips of Iran which include this one on 23 March 2016 of the Alborz Mountains around Tehran.  Not quite part of the Caucasus range although I have seen references to it as part of the "Lesser Caucasus".
