Sir Nigel Gresley 1871-1941
This rather fine and rather imposing statue appeared in King's Cross station a few weeks ago. I managed to get a blip today. I could tell you all about him but somewhat lazily, I have copied th plaque in the extra where you can read all about Sir Nigel. I seemed to have missed the duck story in relation to this statue. Apparently there was a major protest described in BBC news here:
'A statue of railway engineer Sir Nigel Gresley has been unveiled at King's Cross station - with the notable absence of a duck to keep him company.
A mallard was originally included as Sir Nigel liked breeding water fowl and locomotives he designed, including Mallard, were named after birds.
But the Gresley Society Trust changed the design because two of his grandsons thought the duck was "demeaning".
It has not been reinstated and three trust members Have resigned'
Brief day in London today and already on way home. It's raining here so summer feels like its departed. I have hoped to go to cricket in Leeds tomorrow but the rain may make it more difficult. i will check th forecast. Hope it improves as have two days in Taunton for cricket next week.
