Flat Iron

Lovely evening spent in the company of my good friend and fellow lover of foreign cinema, Gabrielle.

We started off with dinner at Flat Iron on Beak Street which was nice without being amazing although the salted chocolate mouse dessert was rather delicious.

Then it was off to see a French film called Disorder at The Institute of Contemporary Arts down on The Mall. Directed by Alice Winocour about a home invasion starring Matthias Schoenaerts and Diane Kruger, it was nominated for the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015.

This section was introduced in 1978 by Gilles Jacob. Each year, it presents a score of films with various types of visions and styles: "original and different" works which seek international recognition and I would definitely class Disorder as different.

Vincent, played by Schoenaerts, is an ex-soldier suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. The disorientation he suffers is excellently conveyed in the film by clever use of sound and sound effects and certainly allows the viewer to feel the "disorder" in Vincent's head.

He is hired to protect the wife of a wealthy businessman while he's out of town at their luxurious villa, Maryland, in the French Riviera and things go south from there.

Not sure enjoyed is the correct verb to describe my experience but it is a good film and worth watching if you like your cinema edgy and not without some violence.

Great company, decent food and entertainment = winning as far as I'm concerned. Roll on the next outing of our little Foreign Film Club.
