Taking over seven hours to cross the solar disc, the innermost planet Mercury passes in transit before the Sun for the first time since 2006 - a small black dot more regular in shape than the bijou sunspot group to the north.
It's a rare chance to see the great natural orrery of the solar system in motion before your eyes - if only Galileo could've seen it.
