Heritage...
.... it's all around us if we care to look. This little stone could date from the 8th Century, a Christian cross slab decorated with a Celtic sunwheel, placed in this old medieval graveyard sometime in the 1930s by a farmer who had it on his land. On the back are marks like Ogham, the first form of Celtic writing, rather unglamorously described as knife sharpenings in the Archaeological Inventory. Though once
it seems it was customary for a Chieftain to sharpen his sword on a significant stone so who knows. Heritage can be very complex and multi-layered .
A horrible day here - damp, humid and grey. My hair has gone mad and the midges are ferocious. I have been bitten half to death. I should have used Himself's Skin So Soft lotion; made by Avon and used by the SAS when sent out to midge zones apparently. It smells pretty ghastly but the thought of all those big (soft) blokes spraying themselves with it makes me laugh. Himself is getting prepared for a walk across Scotland in the summer and is on midge alert!
And a new blog post - furiously trying to catch up with recording the North Cork experience.
