Rescued ...

Pekin Ducklings. 

We had an interesting day today ....

This is going to be a long one but I need to tell my story.

As it is Mother's Day in the states (and elsewhere, too) we decided to go looking for the goslings that R saw earlier this week.  After lunch we drove over to Saucon Park in Bethlehem to see if we could find them. 

Little did we know what the day was going to hold. 

When we first arrived we saw quite a few Canada geese and their goslings.  I happily started photographing them!  I would have been happy with any of those pictures.

After shooting (with the camera!!)  those goslings we went further into the park.  As we drove into the park we saw these tiny ducklings that appeared to be by themselves .... no adult ducks in sight!  As we got out of the car they actually ran up to us!  That was our first clue that they were not wild ducklings.  We think someone may have left them there to fend for themselves.  Who does that?!?

Unfortunately we had both forgot to bring our cell phones with us and so we couldn't call anybody.  We really didn't know who to call anyway. 

There was a box nearby in which we think they had been brought to the park. We made the quick decision to gather them both up and bring them home in the hopes that we could find a new (safer) home for them. I couldn't in good consciousness just leave them behind.  As soon as we got home I called our vet's office to see if they had any advice on who to call.  They gave me a number to a woman who works for a local wildlife rescue operation.

We spoke on the phone several times and she gave me a few places that might take them.  In one of our conversations she mentioned that we should get some duckling food and specific feeders for them.  That conversation led us to finding a new home for these sweet little ducklings!

When we went to the store to buy these items we asked the clerk if she knew of anyone that would be willing to adopt them.  She immediately paged one of her co-workers who is a huge animal lover.  Good call! Kristen immediately said SHE would take them even though she already has 32 other animals!  I think the ducklings are now in good hands.

The more I thought of these abandoned ducklings the angrier and sadder I became.  Who in their right minds would just leave these defenseless ducklings on the side of the road to fend for themselves?!?  Just because they are not as cute as they once were?  What sort of message does that send to their children?  

Even though we only had these sweet ducklings for about 6 hours they made an impression on my heart and it was sad to see them go.  But we know they will be well loved! It is my belief that fate brought us to the park this afternoon.  And fate led us to the lovely Kristen who selflessly took them in.  Thank you, Kristen!
