Stuff and Nonsense

Large Red Damselfly

Another glorious day!
Dragged the husband out of bed(at 9am!) to attend the guided walk around Risley Moss identifying birdsong. This is what I struggle with most when bird watching, but have now managed to identify a few of the more common sounds coming from the trees!
We heard quite a lot of different species, and even managed to see some of them with the binoculars. Photographing them was another matter though - with 12 of us on the walk, they were always well out of reach of my camera's capabilities.
And we kept getting distracted by other things - butterflies and insects were out in force in the sunshine. We saw brimstones, speckled woods, peacocks, orange tips and a tortoiseshell, as well as this large red damselfly and a four-spotted chaser dragonfly which apparently is a very early showing.
We also heard whitethroats, blackcaps, willow warblers and reed buntings, but didn't actually see any!
What we did see though were three hobbies flying high above the moss, and boy can they move - they're like over-sized swifts!
A very successful couple of hours seeing and hearing much more than I ever imagined.
Now I have to tackle the big pile of ironing that has been waiting all weekend :(
Hope everyone has had a lovely weekend.
