Supping Nectar

The south wall of Betty’s is one of the warmest spots in the garden. The bushes there produce very small white flowers, and the twigs resting against the wall are the very first to flower.
As I was looking at these first flowers a wood ant (Formica rufa) climbed aboard and proceeded to drink the nectar. The ant is about 6 mm long.
We spent the whole day in the garden on this day of warm winds and sun. It’s so lovely when you can wear shorts, hang out the washing, rake the garden and just sit in the sun now and again!
