Tongkonan Indonesia
Tongkonan in the Toraja Regency of Sulawesi, Indonesia. The distinctive roof has evolved retaining the shape but often recently with iron roofing - the older Tongkonan have literally a living roof of plants and thatch - some 400 years old. These type of buildings are used as dwellings, meeting places, rice storage and other uses. The larger Tongkonan denote the status in the village of the owner and many have dozens of Buffalo horns assembled at the front. The intricate wood carving as decoration is also a feature. There are many throughout the region that are available as home-stay accommodation at extremely reasonable cost.
