The Old Swan
... shows its wings for Mono Monday.
This iron swan sits perched 10 feet above ground at the entrance to The Old Swan Hotel in Harrogate.
It was from this hotel that the mistress of crime-writing, Agatha Christie, famously disappeared in 1926, resulting in a public furore over the 11 days that she could not be traced.
I have often wondered about the chain around the swan's neck, having initially thought it was there to prevent the theft of the item!
However, I have discovered that this collared and chained swan is an example of a Bohun Swan which was a heraldic badge used originally in England by the mediaeval noble family of de Bohun, Earls of Hereford, and Earls of Essex.
I have included the colour version in today's extra.
