Ashton Memorial
Backblipped for 18th April
Departure was delayed by our watching, during breakfast, a TV programme on HM Queen Elizabeth II's 90th birthday, set in Wales, so we waited until it had finished then headed for Williamson Park in Lancaster.
This is the site of the Ashton Memorial, commissioned in the early C20 by Lord Ashton as a tribute to his late wife, its copper dome a curiosity visible from the M6. Made of Portland Stone, it stands in a park landscaped with a variety of amenities on the site of three quarries from which the city of Lancaster was built. Views from the park extend across Morecambe Bay to the Lake district, so we could watch as rain approached and take refuge in the dog-friendly cafe until it had passed, then wander round the grounds.
Then it was time to rendezvous with friends for lunch before finally heading home.
