Progress

Scheissheimer Street - aka Schleissheimerstrasse - in Munich has been under construction for at least a year. It was a big undertaking to remove the many layers of road that had been added in the last I-don't-know-how-many years. I'm sure that more than a century of road history has been torn up. They took up street car tracks, cobblestones and layers of bitumen.

The street car connecting to the main train station was still running when I was first in Munich in the early 60's and I'm sure the cobble stones predate the street car. However, I don't feel any nostalgia for the cobble stones, as quaint as they might look. They're a killer for a cyclist and this is the main drag where I ride my bike for shopping and going to and fro. New trees have been planted on the sides of the road and the surface of the road is nice and smooth. But what I like best are the new bicycle lanes. That is what I call progress! More room for non-motorized traffic! Yay!
