Big Scotsman in Adelaide
He is known as Scotty, of course. He is 5 meters tall statue of a bagpipe playing Scotsman. He is a Main North Road landmark and a mascot of Scotty's Motel. Everybody in Adelaide knows where Scotty's Corner is.
The rumour has it that Scotty is the result of a drunken bet between the original owner of the motel and the statue's creator. Unfortunately details are lost in time. Whoever constructed him must have been Scottish, surely.
He was built in 1962 and is thought to be the oldest "big thing" in Australia, predating the Big Banana in Queensland by one year. He has bees the subject of several practical jokes over the years. Once some students placed a large salami under his kilt. Thank goodness it is gone now.
