Last Chance Mine
The Grand Canyon is well named. In the late 19th century copper was mined here. The entrances that look like caves can be seen. They are 3.5 miles away and a long way down The copper ore was really rich, up to 50%. Mules brought it up the very steep trail which was the first of these to be established. The price of copper fell in the early 20th century and the mine closed.
The canyon has been on my wish list for some time. It didn't disappoint. The scale of it is astounding. The National Park authority have done it justice. The trails are well maintained, the information boards clear and informative and the geology presentation is first rate.
