Driving through Arizona

This morning we left Las Vegas to the stag and hen parties that were gathering and headed out to the Airport to collect our hire car. We almost immediately got lost, as we tried to find the right road out of the city. The great thing about getting lost though is that you meet so many people, all really willing to help, desperate to get you onto the right road and all happy to talk. You learn so much about a place that way.

Eventually, having got onto a right road, we drove through Nevada and into Arizona. Desert at first – very hot and dusty. Then this changed to semi-desert, as a little vegetation appeared and we were climbing up. Then we were in scrubland and began to see a few cattle. Real cowboy land now.

We at last arrived at Williams where we are staying. A town with a history and a railway, one of its main claims to fame is that the original Route 66 runs through the centre. The place we are staying in is what was once the bordello section of a 19th century saloon building. A place more different from where we were in Vegas it would be difficult to imagine.
