The flower but not the bird

I wish I could say I took the photograph to the sound of the first cuckoo of spring but no such luck - some years I don't hear it all. We're told the UK cuckoo population has declined by as much as half in the past two decades.
The cuckoo flower comes into bloom during April, traditionally coinciding with the arrival of the bird but just as there are no longer as many damp meadows in which the plant  thrives so have conditions changed for the cuckoo. The loss of varied habitat means fewer caterpillars (their favourite food) and fewer 'host' birds' nests to usurp.
So while I'm fortunate to have the flower growing here I'll be luckier still to hear the bird.
