St Andrew's Church Alfriston
The Church we see today was founded in 1360
although excavations in the area reveal evidence
of the conversion of Sussex to Christianity in the
8th Cent. In the 17th or 18th Cent. Box pews were
installed, their high backs and sides providing relief
from winter draughts. Because of its size, this
Church with its soaring arches has become known
as the "Cathedral of the Downs".
