2016 Thursday -- Today's Speaker

Once a semester the library at the campus where I teach presents an event called "Read to Succeed." A book is selected and people all across the campus read it; then the author comes to present his or her views.

This semester, the book The Autistic Brain by Temple Grandin, was selected. Today Grandin was very entertaining and definitely interesting. I think she was a breath of fresh air. She appears to not give a hoot about being politically correct. She believes kids need to be made to get out from behind the screens of their technology. She says there is a lot of learning to do outside. She also believes people should be on time. She thinks a lot of young people can't get jobs because they don't interview well and they don't have a quality portfolio.

Mary Temple Grandin was diagnosed with autism as a child and went on to pursue work in psychology and animal science. She is an American professor of animal science at Colorado State University, world-renowned autism spokesperson and consultant to the livestock industry on animal behavior. She has become a leading advocate for autistic communities and has also written books and provided consultation on the humane treatment of animals.

I was very glad that I was available to attend even though I had to sit in the overflow area and watch it on a large screen. Afterward I went to the main room so I could get the photo.
