Bus Challenge No 88!!
Primrose Hill Woodland, Lansdown, Bath
“The idea to create the wood to celebrate the Millennium was put forward… on behalf of the Bath Chamber of Commerce and the Keep Bath Tidy Group… The Trust's primary project has been to create a Woodland for the local community on a 24 acre site just off Lansdown Road and above Weston Village, all within walking distance of the city centre of Bath. The views of the surrounding countryside are spectacular.
In the sixteen years since the trees were planted, the site has been converted from pastureland into a community woodland with an abundance of wildlife and wild flowers. The 45 different varieties of trees and shrubs were chosen for their colour and scent and include ash, oak, cherry, rowan and sweet chestnut. We have planted nectar bearing shrubs and installed bat and bird boxes to further encourage wildlife. We have planted wild flower seeds and these, plus natural movement from surrounding hedgerows, is gradually transforming the wood into a wildlife haven. There are walks, nature trails and picnic areas.” www.primrosehillwoodland.com
Having recently seen so many beautiful blips of bluebell-carpeted woods, I headed into Bath today to meet up with my Bus Challenge friend, in search of my own Bluebells. A second bus took us to the north of the city, where my friend was my guide for the day, leading me on a four mile walk (complete with picnic lunch!), through Primrose Hill Woods and back down into Bath. Sadly I only came upon a few Bluebells (see extra), but we did enjoy plenty of other flora and fauna, including Cowslips (see extra) and beautiful views over Bath. Given where we were, my blip for today just had to be Primroses!!
