The Life Of Ponty Cyclops

This Feeder Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us

We had a Staring invasion today ... which was really ironic as the RSPB today launched a study into why one of our most plentiful birds has crashed in numbers so alarmingly.

The numbers are quite staggering.

40 million Starlings have disappeared since 1980 across all of Europe. That's an 80% crash in numbers or 150 birds every hour since the dawn of the 80's.

There are still about two million Starlings in the UK, with their numbers being boosted by European birds each winter to form those spectacular murmurations that are part of the autumnal skies.

So whilst a common bird it has become red listed, or an area of conservation concern.

This horrible summer cannot have helped any of our wildlife during the breeding season. A bit of rain they can cope with, but the endless deluge has lead to the worse breeding season on record. Nature has a remarkable ability to bounce back, but it gets harder with every set back. Let's hope this new research can identify the causes of this troubling population crash across Europe and those noisy, squabbling starlings can become a "nuisance" in your garden again!
