Matterhorn, 4478m straddling Switzerland and Italy
It was a great view of the Matterhorn (The Cervin) from Diablerets Glacier this morning.
The Matterhorn remained relatively little known until 1865, but the successful ascent, followed by the tragic accident of the expedition led by Edward Whymper, made it famous, and infamous, at the same time. All climbers wish to ascend this iconic peak but now it has become almost the exclusive domain of the Zermatt guides who meet their clients at the Hornli Hut and take them up and down the peak the next day. Day after day in good summer weather, they charge 1,500 Swiss francs per person! The mountain is so very beautiful though, there will always be people willing to pay and there will always be people who pay with their lives in their attempts to climb it. That is the way of the mountains.
