Swan Lake

Lake Eola is one of my favourite spots – a park right in the centre of the city surrounded by office blocks.  Popular with local people, office workers,  runners, dog walkers etc etc.

Here are a few images showing a Back Swan and her baby at the Lake.

This is set against an unfortunate incident earlier this week being investigated by police. Six cygnets which hatched on Sunday night and were just getting used to life in downtown Orlando when  someone swiped them, despite having one of the most protective dads on Lake Eola.

The mother swan keeps coming back to the empty eggshells and forgotten feathers, wondering why her nest is empty.

Lake Eola boasts a variety of swans: trumpeter swans, whooper swans, Australian black swans, royal mute swans and black neck swans.
The city protects the iconic birds with a variety of measures, including making sure the more than 50 that live and breed at Lake Eola are on specific diets. Each also has a unique identification microchip, which is typically inserted at about one week old. The missing ones hadn’t yet been chipped.
They are convinced it was the work of a 2 legged predator.  Substantial rewards have been offered.

Hopefully the one in the picture will not suffer a similar fate.
