Mono Monday: Environment

Barry had remembered to lock the bike, but forgotten about the tide.

Bristol was the European Green Capital in 2015, so there were quite a few potential photo opportunities for the subject Environment.  There have been initiatives to improve cycling as well as the controversial introduction of a 20 mph speed limit. My extra is a shot of a model Ecohome here in Bristol - designed to explore the possibilities for building greener more sustainable housing.

My main shot is of the tidal River Avon shore-line in Bristol.  At first site you would be forgiven for thinking it very uninspiring but I find it a fascinating mini-environment. There is very significant tidal range, very nearly 50 feet.  If you are lucky you will see a sandpiper or possibly a heron amidst the usual urban seagulls.

When the tide is out, you will also come across any amount of detritus - the flotsam and jetsam of modern living.  Within a short stretch of this shot I came across two shopping trolleys, a traffic cone, various parts of bicycles and an electric fan.  There were also some quite significant tree branches etc. The drift wood I rather like, but it is an enormous shame that people dump their rubbish in this way.

I imagine that if anything the problem is rather better nowadays than it was hundreds of years ago when Bristol was an active port and lacked a decent sewerage system.  Probably best not to think too closely about what the environment looked or smelled like back then!

Thanks to  davidc who is setting the  challenge this month.

I'm struggling a bit for time this evening as we have had some unexpected visitors, so will be trying to catch up again tomorrow.
