What lies beneath...

I know it doesn't look like much of a hole, but this is the result of about 6 hours of back-breaking toil. Everything that can possibly ache, aches.

I've been thinking about an extension on the back of my house, and apparently I need to think about the foundations. So I dug this trial hole; about 1 cubic metre in volume. but requiring me to break through 3 inches of concrete under the flagstones, then a mixture of heavy clay punctuated with bricks and other construction spoil.

The good news is that the foundations look pretty good if this is anything to go by. Let's hope the Building Control Officer agrees.
