Dedication of plaque for Pte. William Young VC
People just starting to gather on the flagmarket in Preston for the centenary of Pte William Young VC's last visit for a hugely popular reception, welcoming him home. He was awarded the VC for an amazing act of bravery bringing his Sergeant in from no-man's land. He was seriously injured but carried on regardless. Sadly he died during an operation on his shattered jaw.
As part of the government's commemorations of the First World War, I believe plaques are being unveiled in the home towns of all those awards the VC - the highest award for bravery. Grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren were all there. It was a really moving event .... as part of Preston Remembers.
