We had the cremation of Peter Johnson today who tragically suffered a catastrophic fall in the town a few weeks ago, a true gentleman who kept his own council.
Peter was born & raised in Dewsbury, he joined Bomber Command in 1944 as a Radio Operator, twice he cheated death, once when the plane he was flying in was involved in a mid air collision over the Moray Forth, all but two of the crew perished and once flying over the coast of Germany when one of the Lancaster's engines caught fire and they had to jettison their payload and coax the aircraft back to Blighty.
He married his beloved Eileen in 1955 and they both taught at schools in the Huddersfield area until they retired. They moved to Ilkley about fifteen years ago and since 2008 Peter has been a widower.
Having been a PE teacher he was incredibly fit for a man of his age, many a time I'd chat with him as he came back from a walk up to The Cow & Calf in Ilkley, he never stopped for a breather but just chose his own pace, he had numerous interests and over the past five years had taught himself to play Chess, Classic Guitar, taken courses in Geology .& local History, even went and joint a Circle Dancing Class where he was given lots of attention being the only man among 15 ladies.
Peter would walk to Booths Supermarket most days to have his lunch, one fateful day he tripped and fell forwards down a set of stone steps leading from the railway bridge in the town and received a fatal trauma to his head passing away a few days later.
He's going to be much missed by use all and I fell proud to have known him, I've added a small SELECTION OF PHOTOS on flickr as a tribute, as a couple they had no children and only very distant family so I hope my small contribution means that he's not forgotten in years to come.
