Seafarers' Memorial
The ruins of Holyrood Church in Southampton stand as a poignant memorial to the men of the sea.
For centuries it was known as the church of sailors, but destroyed during the wartime blitz on Southampton on November 30, 1940, the ruins today have a special place in the heart of this seafaring city, and are preserved as a memorial and garden of rest dedicated to those who have served in the Merchant Navy and have lost their lives at sea.
A massive ships anchor has been mounted on the paved area fronting the church, and there is another inside the ruins.
But although much of the church was destroyed by the air-raids of 1940, the preserved ruins are a fitting memorial to the city’s seafaring links.
Beneath the tower which still remains, is a memorial to those who lost their lives in the sinking of the Titanic.
The church originally dates back to the 14th century.
