The 'for sale' sign meant that many of the books had to go - boxed in cupboards, the rest scattered thinly on bookcases they now share with ornaments or, worse, empty compartments. No longer functional, their original order survives only in patches, as here: a row of poetry books almost in alphabetical sequence. Almost, but not quite.
