Holgate Windmill - YORK

York's last remaining mill was established way back in October 1770 and was grinding corn until 1930 by wind power alone, then with the aid of electric motors for a further three years until 1933 when it ceased to operate.
The mill stood in open countryside near the hamlet of Holgate one and a half miles from the city centre, the original horse and cart track to the mill survives, in narrowed form as a snicket from Acomb Road.
In 2001 The Holgate Windmill Preservation Society was formed and through the dedication of it's volunteers the Mill is now working once more.
