Olympic rings

A cracking day up in London with my daughter. Recommend the Ballgowns exhibition at the V and A. There was a classic moment in the ticket queue though: the American lady ahead of us was quizzing the member of staff about what to see, and said, honest, "I just want to see really old stuff".

After a bite to eat in Knightsbridge, we headed for Borough Market for a work related meeting with a former student, now an Archaeologist/ Academic and Adventurer. Fascinating guy. Sadly mch of the market had closed down for the day, but it was still good to potter round.

Finally we headed to London Bridge to get a view of Tower Bridge, resplendent with its Olympic rings. Initial disappointment as the rings were tucked up, but it transpired this was to allow the bridge to open for a large ship, then they were let down. More bizarre was finding a statue of the Olympic mascot Wenlock, in the street by The Monument; I have always thought these rather weird; this looked downright sinister (photo on Twitter @Pennyw61).
There is so much cynicism about the Olympics, but as a born and bred Londoner, I felt great pride up in town, as places had been cleaned up and London was looking great. The signage everywhere, especially on the Tube showed all was ready , and the voice of Boris over the tannoys, genius.
We have a great country (mostly!), don't knock it.
